What Is a Sight Glass?
A sight glass — also called a sight window, inspection glass or observation port — is a pressure-rated transparent assembly fitted into a vessel wall or into a pipeline so operators can observe the process media without opening the system. It is a passive component with three parts: a metal body, a glass window rated to the process pressure and temperature, and a gasket that seals the window in place. Nothing inside moves.
Sight glasses fall into two families. Vessel sight glasses are mounted on tanks, reactors and storage vessels, where their job is to show liquid level, product color, mixing behavior, foaming or sediment build-up. What Is a Sight Flow Indicator?
A sight flow indicator is an inline viewing device that combines a transparent window with an internal moving element that responds to flow. That moving element is the defining difference. A flapper (or paddle) is hinged at the top of the body and pushed open by the flow; if the line stops, the flapper drops, and the change is obvious. - Lubrication and oil return lines — confirming that oil is actually returning to the reservoir, not just that the reservoir has oil in it.

How to Choose: A Decision Checklist
- 1. What question must the operator answer? "What is in the vessel / what does the media look like?" → sight glass. "Is the media moving?" → sight flow indicator.
- 2. Where does it install? Vessel wall, tank or reactor → sight glass family. Inline in a pipe → either; add the flow question to decide.
- 3. Is flow confirmation part of the job? Pump verification, cooling, seal water, drain or purge lines → sight flow indicator. If flow confirmation matters, a plain window will disappoint.
- 4. Do you need direction or rate? Rough rate or direction → rotary element. On/off flow only → flapper or ball. Gravity drip rate → drip tube.

One rule applies to both: specify the worst-case combination — maximum pressure together with maximum temperature, plus vacuum if it can occur — and verify the glass type against the media, because the window is the pressure boundary.
Can You Use a Sight Glass and a Sight Flow Indicator Together?
Yes — and in practice they are frequently installed on the same skid, because they answer different questions. A common arrangement is a vessel with a sight glass for level, plus a flow indicator on the discharge line to verify the pump is actually moving product. Another is a plain sight glass upstream to watch media condition and a flow indicator downstream to confirm flow reaches the next unit. They do not replace each other: a flow indicator tells you nothing about level, and a vessel sight glass tells you nothing about movement.
Two practical notes when combining them. First, rate each window independently — the pressure and temperature at a vessel nozzle can differ from the conditions at a discharge line.
